Our second social enterprise of the month is: Planet Labs For February we are heading into space. Planet Labs is a truly cosmic business. Whether they meet the purists definition of social enterprise we’re not sure but we love their tagline: “Using space to help life on earth.” We think this makes them a business with a good cause, so close enough!
Who are they? Planet Labs were founded in 2010 by a group of NASA scientists with a passion for data and creating positive change. Where are they? In space, almost literally! But on terra firma their head office is where all tech businesses seem to be - in San Francisco. What they do? Planet Labs use a flock of micro satellites to collect data about the earth that can be used in all sorts of ways such as measuring agricultural yields, monitoring natural resources, or aiding first responders after natural disasters. Why do we like them? They have a great mission, they talk about their social impact, they have a code of ethics.
