Ecosia is a search engine that plants trees with its revenue. You search, ads generate revenue, Ecosia uses that income to plant trees! Simple.

They have planted over 16 million trees in countries all over the world.

Ecosia’s mission
Plant trees while you search the web. It takes just 45 searches to plant a tree.

What do they sell?
The majority of their income is generated from advertising.

Why do we like them?
Who knew something as simple as internet searching could be a social good. Ecosia are transparent - publishing regular financial reports and tree planting receipts. We love the simplicity and the clear business model.

Who are they?
Baltic Creative CIC was established in 2009 to provide creative space that meets the varied needs of the creative and digital sector and is playing a major part in the regeneration of their local community.

Where are they?
Liverpool, England

What do they do?
They provide flexible work space for creative and digital businesses in Liverpool.  They offer a mix of spaces, including conference facilities.
Baltic Creative CIC is playing a major role in the regeneration of the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool.
The impact of the space has supported job creation in the area, and is home to a vibrant community of creatives and technologists.
They responsibly ensure all surpluses are reinvested into supporting their businesses, investing in their buildings and investing in the sector generally.

What is Safecast?
 
Safecast is a volunteer driven non-profit organization whose goal is to create useful and accessible environmental data for public information and research. Begun in response to the nuclear disaster in Japan in March, 2011, Safecast collects radiation and other environmental data from all over the world. All Safecast data is published, free of charge under licence.
 
Safecast’s mission
 
Safecast’s mission is to provide citizens worldwide with the tools they need to inform themselves by gathering and sharing accurate environmental data in an open and participatory fashion. They aim to empower people with data about their environments.
 
Safecast values
 
They believe that having more freely available open data is better for everyone. They believe in openness, and believe that only open data is trustworthy data. Safecast says it is “pro-data.” Safecast believe that independence, transparency, and openness are essential and the key to their credibility
 
Where is the business based?
 
The business has offices in Shibuya in Japan but has a global reach.
 
What do they sell?
 
They get donations and are supported by charitable giving but also sell radiation monitoring devices.
 
Why do we like them?
 
We love citizen science and Safecast is at the vanguard of this movement. We particularly like their approach to using open citizen science for the environment.

Who are they? Club Kidpreneur is an Australian social enterprise, founded by entrepreneurial trailblazers Creel and Tania Price in 2009. 

Where are they? Based in Sydney but working with kids all over Australia.

What do they do? The Club Kidpreneur program aims to ignite the entrepreneurial mindset in Primary School students through a real-world, product-based learning experience that puts STEM into action. Students work in small teams to build a micro-business, sell hand-made products at market, and donate their profits to social causes. They can then choose to pitch their ideas to entrepreneurs, Dragon’s Den -style, in the annual national competition Kidpreneur Challenge.

Why do we like them? As Whitney Houston once said, “I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way…” As parents, this is a sentiment very close to Team Iridescent’s heart and this is exactly what Club Kidpreneur is trying to do.
According to Co-Founder and CEO Creel Price “Some futurists are predicting that children of today will have 40 different jobs across 10 career paths in their working lives. In 20 years, the average corporate job we know today will not exist.”

“The life skills that would apply to any profession in the future include imagination; initiative; resourcefulness; resilience and interpersonal skills i.e. team work, leadership and communication.”

But Club Kidpreneur not only focuses on supporting kids to be successful in the future, but enables them to discover what they’re capable of and the very real difference they can make now: over the past seven years Club Kidpreneur has seen 10,000 kidpreneurs raise over $350,000 for worthy causes through starting their own micro-businesses. Amazing!

Nurdle’s mission
 
Nurdle’s mission is to remove and recycle micro plastics (also called nurdles) that are polluting the shores. Nurdle - the business - remould these plastic beads into things of beauty which you can buy. Profits are then used to fund beach/ocean clean-up work. Simply put, Nurdle want to make marine plastic extinct.
 
What are nurdles and what’s the problem?
 
What is a ‘nurdle’ we hear you ask. It’s a term for a gentle nudge-like cricket shot coined by Richie Benaud we hear some of you say. Well it is that but in this context nurdles are tiny - four or five millimetre in size - plastic pellets. They are preproduction plastics which, due to their minute size, can be easily transported in container ships. They are melted down and moulded into a variety of plastic products we use every day. The problem is that millions of these pellets get washed overboard and end up on our beaches and in the sea. This causes huge environmental damage to wildlife and our beaches.

Where is the business based?
 
Right here in Plymouth. Nurdle successfully received investment from Plymouth University to develop their business idea.
 
What do they sell?
 
Nurdle are developing a range of products including key rings and coasters. They also sell t-shirts to raise awareness.
 
Why do we like them?
 
It’s a simple solution to a big problem. It’s enterprising. They are great guys too - they are always out cleaning beaches.

Who are they?
BeeKeeper is a social business hatched between a brother (Koky) and sister (Sophia) in 2012. Their mission is to create products that change the world, do no harm to the environment, nourish and support the people and animals that dwell on our planet; to seek solutions to our environmental crisis; to use business to inspire people to consume less; to do more and BEE MORE and to support BabyTree Projects in its fight for quality education for all children.

What do they do?
They create a range of brilliantly designed backpacks, which can be purchased from their website and from Pop-up shops. Their backpacks aim to tackle 'the worlds textile waste issue' whilst giving children in rural Cambodia the chance to get a quality education.  

Why we like them?

Who are they?
Arthur Lissaman and Henry Shiel both lived in an age where a shirt was both an everyday item of clothing, and something special to be looked after.  Holes darned, cuffs reversed & collars starched.  Their descendants formed Arthur & Henry taking inspiration from an era when men dressed just that little bit smarter and clothes were made to last.
 
Where are they?
London-based but with international suppliers.
 
What do they do?
Arthur & Henry believe that every man needs a good shirt and so they founded Arthur & Henry to provide beautiful, ethical, men's shirts. Their shirts are good shirts.  They are well made.  They are good for the environment made with organic cotton.  They are good for the people who’ve had a hand in making them, from farmer to factory worker, weaver to dyer.
 
Why do we like them?
Their values are pretty simple: do less harm, do more good. 

Organic: They only use organic cotton, grown using agricultural methods designed to help sustain the soil it grows on, and the farmers who grow it. 

Fairtrade: Some of their shirts also carry the Fairtrade Mark.  Fairtrade certification means the farmers meet the Fairtrade cotton standards and that they received the Fairtrade minimum price plus a Fairtrade premium.  They are working to have all their shirts Fairtrade & organic certified.

Ethical: The suppliers involved in processing their cotton shirts have all been audited against the Global Organic Textile Standard social criteria at a minimum and the shirt factory has been audited against a variety of high criteria codes. Their shirts are produced in a unit within a small factory in Bangalore and their tailors are amongst the most skilled in the unit and are paid the highest wages.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle: Most of their shirts now come in compostable biodegradable 'poly' bags. Some shirts are still in plastic polybags which can be recycled.  All the tissue they use is FSC certified or recycled.  The cardboard boxes they ship out the shirts in are also FSC/recycled.

Charity: They pledge to give 1% of their turnover every year to charity.

TLC’s mission
TLC strives to protect the environment by supporting a “green” culture through green products and initiatives to inspire everyone to care for and to help the less fortunate.
 
The history
TLC is the brainchild of its CEO, Julia Chong. Julia's dream of establishing a philanthropic company based on a corporate profit model became a reality in July 2006. TLC became Malaysia’s first socially responsible company to pledge 100% of the company's dividends to qualified registered charities.
 
Where are they?
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Their products are available in most major supermarkets, and small to medium grocery shops across the country.
 
Why do we like them?
We like their approach in that even basic household goods can make a difference.

Their motto: ‘Let your daily routine become an act of kindness’ maybe a bit kitsch for UK audiences but it makes us smile.

Who are they?
Bristol Together CIC was launched in October 2011 as a social business. They buy empty properties that require substantial repair and refurbishment.
Not only does that enable them to create jobs for ex-offenders, but also ensures that when the property is resold they can make a profit to reinvest back into the social enterprise.

Bristol, England
 
What they do?
They have already helped over 60 people into work, and only one person has re-offended in that time. They expect that they will continue to see very low levels of re-offending amongst our employees 

Why do we like them?

• Great to see a property company that is a social enterprise
